really wanted to like the Odyssey+ but as the title says I decided I'm returning it and keeping my Odyssey OG instead. I see no reason to review the + as plenty of folks have posted about it already, but here are some reasons why the Odyssey+ may not be for you.
I included some information specifically for OG Odyssey owners, some things to try with your headset to help you make the decision whether it will work for you ergonomically. For everyone else, its just ideas to keep in mind before purchasing.
Screen: I never thought I'd say this. Touted by virtually everyone as an improvement it turned out the be a detriment in my case. True, the SDE is greatly reduced, almost gone altogether. But the side effect of this is a softening of the image of sorts, best I can describe it is very similar to having your monitor set to a non-native resolution. It's not blurry, just soft looking. In comparison, the OG Odyssey image is very crisp and sharp, something the + simply cannot replicate. If you can't stand your monitor running at non-native resolution, this will bother you to no end.
Headstrap angle Samsung has changed about the tilt of the head strap ever so slightly downwards that in turn affects the angle of the lenses in relation to your eyes. In my case this reduces the sweet spot significantly. Deleting the tensioner at the base where the strap attaches to the hmd was a step back as well as far as adjustability and convenience goes. Those who have the OG Odyssey, tilt it slightly downwards to check if your sweet spot is affected before making the jump to the +.
Padding Samsung had it right the first time with easy to clean non-porous padding. Foam may be fine if you don't sweat and have no plans for someone to share the headset, otherwise it's gross. Furthermore, either because of the reshaped eye box, foam padding, or perhaps the before-mentioned lack of head strap to hmd tensioner the FOV is reduced. I can consistently got between 3-5 degrees less in ROV test FOV & Resolution in the Odyssey+.
The Deal-breaker: Nose opening What was Samsung thinking? Medium-sized male Caucasian nose here, not pointy, not flat - more or less middle of the road. The opening is now shorter and much wider: Massive light leak at the nose area of the + where there was none with the OG. Annoying and immersion-breaking. Additionally (and this is worse), the nose opening does not reach as high up proportional to the lenses. For my eyes to be in the sweet spot on the + I now must rest the headset firmly against the bridge of my nose. It is quite uncomfortable even in short stints and the true deal-breaker here for me. To OG Odyssey owners, try to move the hmd approximately 5mm down on your face to see if you experience similar discomfort due to the shorter opening.
Despite favorable reviews, in my case The Odyssey+ is unfortunately one step forward two steps back from the OG. You may want to look elsewhere or at least check out alternatives if any of the above apply to you.
